Rae Lakes Loop

A fun hike!

A fun, good challenge of a trip! About 50 miles around. They say if you can do this, you’re pretty much ready for the John Muir Trail!

Main summit is over Glenn Pass, (the third highest pass on the JMT), but the trail winds up and around glacier lakes and valleys. Lots of different scenery! This trip could be done in anywhere from 4 to 6 days (we did it in 5). Some pretty steep switchbacks around that pass, but it’s definitely worth it! Make sure you have good hiking shoes for this (we get ours from Big 5 / Brooks / REI). Find the ones that you like, and experiment with different kinds of shoes until you get something that feels right. Moleskins are important!!! Lots of steep downhill can lead to blisters, especially when you’re still learning what shoes work best for you.
